Every time you open a newspaper, magazine or switch a television channel, you find a new advertisement for a product or service. These advertisements aren't put up recommended, there a whole process of strategizing, planning, budgeting, etc, before promoting any ad on any medium. The most important aspect of promoting an ad is where your ad is displayed which known as ad space. This where the advertising space person comes into the picture.
WHO IS AN ADVERTISING SPACE SALESPERSON?
An advertising space salesperson is the one who basically responsible for selling a specific 'ad space' in a newspaper, magazine, journal for print media and an "air-time' or a time slot for electronic media which includes television, radio, telephone, desktop computer, game console, handheld device etc to clients/companies who are interested in advertising their products/ services in print or electronic media.
JOB PROFILE OF AN ADVERTISING SPACE SALESPERSON-
Your role will vary according to the nature of your employer's business. However, your day-to-day tasks are likely to include:
- Persuading clients to buy advertising space or time
- Finding out who controls the advertising budget in target organizations and contacting them
- Explaining the benefits of your medium, using statistics on readership or viewing figures
- Offering a price and negotiating around it
- Closing the deal and recording the details.

EDUCATION-
For this job usually, skills are given more importance than a degree and though there is no specific degree in ad space selling, a degree/specialization/ certification course in advertising, marketing, sales, consumer buying behavior, media planning, Marketing Strategy, Product / Brand Management, etc would be advantageous.

- Digital agencies- With an increase in digitalization, ad space is also sold for online platforms like blogs, youtube videos, articles, etc though there is a tool like ad sense to handle online advertising, some companies still prefer to hire a space selling agent.
The most important thing to remember with media sales is that it is a ‘sales’ job. It’s unlikely that a career starting in media sales will directly lead you to a job as a television producer, advertising copywriter or magazine columnist.
Sure, you might be lucky, but if you want to work in journalism, advertising or broadcasting then it’s probably best to get work experience in those areas first. The people who prosper in the media sales industry are the people who enjoy selling.
