Interior designer is not new concept to us, as through out our lives we have been organizing and designing the places around us. Interior designing is shaping the look of an area to create a pleasing aesthetic for the client. Interior designers make interior spaces functional, safe, and beautiful by determining accurate space requirement and selecting decorative items, such as colors, lighting, and materials. They must read blueprints and must be aware of inspection regulations and building codes.Interior designers work together with  builders,architects, structural engineers and mechanical engineers to determine how interior spaces will function, look, and be furnished.

SCOPE OF INTERIOR DESIGNING - 

 With each passing day, the city-dwelling population is increasing and correspondingly, the available living spaces are shrinking. This makes the efficient use of existing space a vastly important task. In recent times, the increasing standard of living in urban areas of India combined with the new mindset and approach of the younger generation has led interior designing to become an entirely independent field of its own that does not fall in the shadows of architecture and civil engineering. 
In the current scenario, 1,00,000 interior designers are needed in India alone to fulfill the requirements for freelance projects as well as the jobs that are available in establishments such as architectural and construction firms and furniture companies. According to a recent survey, most of the people who bought a 40 lakh house are investing around 30–40% only on interior design.

 EDUCATION-

Eligibility: The minimum qualification required is 10+2 passed (any stream- Science, Commerce or Arts) from a recognized board in almost all. Usually around 45-50% aggregate marks, is criteria for minimum marks in many institutes.

While for Bachelor of Interior Design, offered by CEPT, the minimum qualification required is 10+2 passed in Science stream with PCM subjects.

Post Graduation-

Notes-

Other than Master’s Degree programs, graduates may also go for PG Diploma as well as PG Certificate courses.

Through PG courses one can also specialisation in sub disciplines of interior design field such as product desgning, landscape design, building design, building energy efficiency, sustainable design and technology etc.

Diploma course- 

Diploma courses related to interior design education are- 

-Diploma in Interior Design

-Diploma in Interior Design and Architecture

Duration: Depending upon the nature of the program and the institute that offer it , course duration could be between 1-2 years.

Eligibility:  Minimum qualification-10+2 passed from any stream- Science, Commerce or Arts, from a recognized board.

Minimum marks criteria - usually 45-50%, depending on the institution you apply for. 

 Certification in interior designing available in India include-

-Certificate in Interior Design

-Certificate in Interior Design and Decoration

 Duration: Course duration could be anywhere between 6 months to 1 year.

ENTRANCE EXAM- 

In order to secure admission in above colleges, aspirants need to clear an entrance exam. Most of the design entrance tests conducted in India are at the college level and candidates have to clear 2-3 rounds in order to be selected for admissions.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES-

 -They may either choose to work under supervise set-up, design studios and interior design firms,property developer or work independenly.
 -When it comes comes to Government job,  TWD, Municipal co-orporation and town planning departments are known to hire.
 -They may also part of government schemes relating to housing and relocation of people.

SALARY PROSPECTS-

In India, depending on the employer or and one's  job experience the salary, including bonuses and commissions is for-

Assistant interior designers ranges between Rs. 30,000 to Rs.40,000 p.m and for interior designers at senior level, the salary is approximately Rs. 800,000 to Rs. 3,000,000 per annum.
