Hi, this question is on behalf of a friend, who is blind and pursuing BA in psychology, last year. He is interested in Family counselling, so can he pursue Masters in Clinical Psychology, and whether it would not be a hindrance in his job, considering the blindness condition?

Hi, firstly I would like to congratulate your friend, despite of his condition he has successfully completed BA in Psychology. Usually in psychology there are some places where you might have to observe mannerism or physical aspects to analyse, but there are assistants who can help with that. Clinical Psychology falls under diagnostic part where you have to be licensed from RCI(Rehabilitation Council Of India) to diagnose clinical disorders like depression, etc. But if you are interested in Family Counselling, then you can choose Masters in Counselling or Masters in Psychology with specialisation subject as Family Counselling.

You don't need a license to become a counsellor. It includes general counselling like relationship counselling career counselling, etc. You can do MA in Counselling to become a counsellor. To become a clinical psychologist, you need license from RCI. It includes diagnosing bigger issues like Depression and psychiatric disorders. You can do Masters in Clinical Psychology. Clinical psychologists, then pushes the case to psychiatrist who is qualified to prescribe treatment and medicines. Psychiatrists are MBBS, MD.
